There’s something about the look, the feel, and even the smell of a Gibson that exudes the quality craftsmanship that’s captivated guitar players of all stripes for years. There’s much more than one type of Gibson that’s captured the hearts and hands of generations of amateur and professional musicians. Here’s an informative run down:

The J45: The bread and butter acoustic dreadnought is a versatile machine that sounds terrific for acoustic rock, blues, and various fingerpicking styles. It’s been a Gibson staple for decades used by players like Buddy Holly to Bob Dylan and countless others. Listing all the famous celebrities who’ve wielded a J45 would appear to be shamelessly name-dropping. For the musician demanding perfect action, a well-rounded clear tone, and a bad-ass looking guitar, this is the one. This is especially true in the various dark bursts available. It comes as a traditional acoustic or with built in pick-ups, making it practical for casual players who want a beautiful instrument and professional musicians who’ll be playing shows. The J45 is one of the quintessential Gibson instruments and a truly a timeless guitar.

The Les Paul: This is the holy-grail for hard classic rockers! The image of Jimmy Page’s melting guitar face while bending the strings on his signature Les Paul is surely etched in the minds of rock and roll fans around the world. And for good reason. The solid-body Les Paul produces the sonic wailing rockers pine for. And the compact, curvaceous look is the stuff musicians dream of. There’s a reason countless knock offs are designed to look like a Les Paul, but there is no substitute for that sound! When you hold one in your hand you’ll know why musicians like Jimmy Page, Keith Richards, and Slash were so captivated. The list of players who used a Gibson Les Paul is embarrassingly rich.

Epiphone Hollow bodies: This is a guitar used mostly for blues and jazz, but John Lennon proved it was effective for rock too. As such, Gibson produced for him a custom model that’s still available today. Hollow body arch tops are famous for their warm, mellow tones, and for this reason are preferred by jazz players who enjoy clean tones, perhaps laced with some reverb or subtle other effects. Of course there are exceptions, but the commonly held image of a jazz player bopping with his arch-top is authentic. This is no less true for blues players who enjoy the rich, clean tones that effortlessly emanates from the Epiphone.

Gibson SG: This is a crunchy beast for rock players seeking a hard, nasty tone. The distortion is clear but edgy. With the classic cutaways on the bottom and top the guitar has a look all its own. Especially in red, the sharp double points of the cutaway give the guitar a devilish quality which is no way diminished by the sound! They are usually in a lower price bracket then guitars listed above, but they’re for serious rock and blues players.

Trying to learn how to play guitars? Then consider taking guitar lessons from Long & McQuade – one of Canada’s biggest music stores offering a wide selection of musical instruments like Gibson guitars and music lessons all across the nation.

The internet has led to changes that would have been impossible to understand just a decade ago. Buying a musical instrument without hearing it is one such change. But keep a few things in mind when you do it and it can be a convenient way to score a good instrument at a good price.

There’s really two kinds of people who should be buying their guitars online, experts or really serious guitar players and beginners. The first group knows exactly what kind of guitar they want, and at that level of price and quality they can be assured that that particular guitar will be terrific. Beginners don’t really care as much, so long as it has six strings and can play. The truth is each guitar is unique as its made out of a particular sheet of wood that experiences conditions unlike any of its fellow models at the factory. Each sheet is alive, and guitars can age with grace or misery depending on how they’re maintained. This needs to be kept in mind when looking online, but even still it’s possible to buy.

Let’s say you’re looking for a vintage guitar. You know what an old Gibson ES125 will sound and play like because presumably you’ve played one before or you have a particular interest in that guitar. There is variety in each instrument, this truth can’t be said nor emphasized enough, but you can count on quality guitar makers to make reliably good instruments. Most sellers are very upfront and compile a list of the defects, repairs, problems with the instrument. Typically they’ll have close up shots of the damaged parts. This will convince you they’re being pretty honest. It’d take a cynic to believe that they’re listing the minor defects so to appear honest only so they can get away with a big, big problem. Check the seller’s history on Ebay. Many reputable music shops sell on Ebay too, so if you can find out where they’re located and learn more about their business this should help.

If you are a beginner looking for your first guitar the internet is useful too. Perhaps you want the bottom of the line guitar to experiment on to see if you might actually seriously take it up. Or maybe you want to find a good guitar at bargain prices. In this case, look for a company you trust and a guitar model you’ve played before or you know is really decent. There’s no shortage of companies: Norman, Simon and Patrick, Art and Lutherie, Seagull.

You don’t want to buy a no-name guitars nobody’s ever heard of without playing it, but the internet is full of people moving and desperate to get rid of what they can for a penny or people who don’t know the value of what they have, and tapping into that is a good idea. Look to see if there’s a way you can get your money back or some type of assurance that you’ll be fully satisfied with your purchase.

Searching for a music store that carries acoustic guitars and electric guitars in your neighbourhood? Then be sure to visit Long & McQuade – one of Canada’s biggest music stores offering a wide selection of musical instruments and guitar lessons all across the nation.

Tuning a guitar is one of the first things to aggravate new students of the instrument. When the guitar isn’t tuned and they go to play, it’ll sound discordant but they may not know why. When they do know why their chords sound wrong tuning it may still pose a good challenge. Frustration can be debilitating, especially at the novice stage. Here are some tips on how to keep your instrument sounding true.

The most obvious way is to buy a guitar tuner. Believe it or not, there was a time when tuners cost hundreds of dollars! Now they’re ultra small devices that can clip onto your guitar. These ones are good because they’re convenient, but they also work reliably since they’re physically attached to the neck, and thus pick up on the strings vibrations through the wood. They can be purchased for around twenty dollars. Unless you have perfect pitch they’re very useful for musicians of all levels.

Assuming you have a tuner you need to know the letter names of each string. Chromatic tuners work by reading the note that is being played. So if you play your E string and it sounds like a D you need to know that your tuner won’t tell you to tune your string up a tone. It’ll tell you that your string reads a “D”, and that as a “D” it is in tune. Guitar players sometimes put their strings in different tunings, so this function is very useful. But for a novice it’s essential to know what notes the strings need to be tuned at. For quick reference: 6th string= E, 5th string= A, 4th string= D, 3rd string= G, 2nd string=B, 1st string= E.

But you don’t need a tuner so long as you have a reference point. For many, pianos are keyboards are reliable since they take significantly longer to go out of tune. If you play an E on the piano you can safely adjust your E to sound like it. Once you have one string in tune there’s a methodical pattern to get the rest in line. If you play the fifth fret of the sixth string the note you’ll produce will be an A. This is what the fifth string should sound like when you play it open. Bo back and forth, playing the A on the sixth string and sounding your 5th string open until they sound identical. Do this on every string except for when it comes to tuning your 2nd string. For this, play the fourth fret of the string above it. This is the only exception. The B on the third string can be found on the fourth fret, which is what the second string needs to be tuned to when it’s played openly.

There are pitch pipes you can buy, and another method of tuning involves playing harmonics and adjusting the strings, but these are the simplest and most traditional ways of doing it. The importance of making sure your instrument is tuned properly every time you play it cannot be overstated! After a few times you’ll get the hang of it: like guitars itself, you just need to practice!

Trying to learn how to play guitars? Then consider taking guitar lessons from Long & McQuade – one of Canada’s biggest music stores offering a wide selection of musical instruments and music lessons all across the nation.

It’s not a giant deal about serial numbers, it is simply one other number. Should you assume this way then you might be wrong. Read this by means of as you can be amazed with the small print behind serial numbers of guitars.

The best way to discover the year of manufacture of a selected Gibson guitar is to reference the instrument’s serial number of manufacturing unit order number. Source : gibson les paul

Within the 1970s, Gibson standardized the serial number system that is nonetheless in use today. The typically eight-digit serial numbers on Gibson guitars are stamped on the backside of the headstock. The primary and the fifth number combined present the 12 months that the instrument was made. The second, third, and fourth numbers show on which day of that 12 months the instrument was made. The sixth quantity represents the location where the instrument was made, and the last digits show the “production run” number. Source : gibson les paul guitar

From 1975-1977 the number is often discovered on a decal on the again of the headstock. This needs to be an 8 digit number that may be dated by the first and 2nd digits as follows:

ninety nine = 1975 00= 1976 06 = 1977

In 1977, Gibson introduced the serialization methodology that we primarily use to at the present time at Gibson USA, Gibson Acoustic, and the Gibson Customized facility in Memphis, TN.

The serial quantity will likely be an 8 digit quantity impressed into the back of the headstock with “MADE IN USA” below.

The pattern is as follows: YDDDYRRR YY is the manufacturing year DDD is the day of the 12 months RRR is the manufacturing unit ranking/plant designation number. Previous to 1984 when the Kalamazoo, MI manufacturing facility was closed, the numbers 001-499 indicated Kalamazoo production. Ranking numbers 500-999 continued to indicate Nashville manufacturing by way of 1989.

Since 1989, all Gibson acoustics are inbuilt Bozeman, MT and all Gibson electrics are in-built Nashville or Memphis. Ranking numbers for Bozeman start every day at 001 and the electrics could begin as little as the 300s.

Examples: 70108276 means the instrument was produced on Jan. 10, 1978, in Kalamazoo and was the 276th instrument stamped that day.

82765501 means the instrument was produced on Oct. three, 1985, in Nashville and was the 1st instrument stamped that day.

NOTE – Gibson USA goes to a 9 digit serial number in early July 2005.. The sixth quantity is now a batch number- batch zero starts at the beginning of the day, and as soon as we stamp 699, the batch number will change to 1. The first 5 numbers remain the identical, the last three numbers will stay the same. The one distinction is the addition of this batch indicator.

There are always exceptions to those rules, the two listed under are price noting:

Les Paul Classic: This mannequin features an ink stamped serial quantity with no “MADE IN USA” (simply as we used on the unique 1952-1960 Les Pauls). Most might be 5 to 6 digits in length, but the earliest examples characteristic 4 digit serial numbers. There should be a space after the 1st digit with the four and 5 digit serial numbers, and no area with the 6 digit numbers.

The first digit indicates the yr of manufacture for the 4 & 5 digit serial numbers, these were used from 1989-1999. The 1st and 2nd point out the 12 months of manufacture for the 6 digit serial numbers which we’ve been utilizing since 2000.

Examples – 9 xxx = 1989 (4 digit quantity beginning with “9″ used only in 1989) zero xxxx = 1990 9 xxxx = 1999 00xxxx = 2000 05xxxx = 2005

These starting with “ninety four”: In 1994, Gibson’s Centennial 12 months, many instruments have a serial number that begins with “94″ for the yr, with the remaining 6 digits indicating the rating number.

EPIPHONE GUITARS SERIAL INFORMATION

Most common manufacturing fashions since ca. 1993. Many ’80s and early ’90s serial numbers may follow an analogous scheme, however could not embrace a manufacturing unit ID code. FYYMMRRRR F= Manufacturing facility code (this may be 2 letters as properly) YY= yr of manufacture (this can be simply 1 digit for ’90s fashions) MM= month of manufacture R= rating number (could also be more or less digits, not necessarily indicative of whole models produced) Instance – S02021234 was issued in Feb. 2002.

One other code used on some current Epiphone fashions FYYMRRRR F= Manufacturing facility code YY=12 months of manufacture M= This shall be a letter code equivalent to the month (A=January, B=February, etc…) RRRR= rating quantity Example – R03D0263 was issued in April 2003.

Epiphone Elite/Elitist fashions FYSSSS F= Manufacturing unit Code (this code will likely be an “F” or “T”) Y= Yr of manufacture (2 = 2002, 3 = 2003, etc.) SSSS= Sequential Serial Number Example – T41234 is a 2004 Elitist model.

If you’re looking for local guitar lessons it’s likely you have a casual interest in learning guitar. Maybe you’ve always seen people playing it around fires up North, or at parties, and you’d like to be that guy. Playing music is a beautiful thing and many people derive endless satisfaction out of being able to play their favourite songs and entertain their friends. The good news is you don’t need to be a technical wizard to have a lot of fun on the instrument! Here are tips to help you find a local musician who can get you up and playing.

Frequently local musicians post flyers on telephone poles and up in community boards around the area in which they work. This is an inexpensive way to get a presence in a targeted community. Keep an eye out for these. Often there’ll be a few competing services. Don’t be afraid to contact both to compare their rates and to ask them what experience they have. Let them tell you what makes them better than the competition. Sometimes they’ll have a studio from where they teach, and other times they’ll come to your home. Usually the latter is more expensive, but sometimes not by very much, and the time you save is always worth it.

If someone recommends to you a teacher that’s always best. Like selecting restaurants or anything else, taking the advice of someone you trust is a reliable way to dive into the world of guitar. Only your friends know you and the teacher. Truthfully, musicians by and large are a kind bunch who for whatever reason seem to all have well developed senses of humour, but having a friend match this up for you expedites the process and does a lot to ensure compatibility.

So long as the teacher is serious about teaching, and you’re serious too, you’ll be able to get to play chords and do basic guitar playing. What you don’t want is a failing musician trying to make a buck on the side by wasting your time and money. This happens from time to time. This is the most serious pitfall to avoid. You can tell from a guitar lessons whether your teacher has a passion for teaching and whether or not they take a special interest in you. You’ll have a gut feeling. Go with your gut.

It boils down to experience teaching and qualifications. Experience teaching is self explanatory, unless they have years being a mediocre teacher in which case you can only learn after taking lessons for a while. There are two kinds of qualifications: certifications and music experience. It’s hard to say what’s more valuable, as this is really different for every teacher. If a teacher has both this is obviously preferable, but it’s hard to find a local teacher so highly qualified. It’s great if he’s graduated from a music program or a teaching program. But if he has a lot of stage experience this can be very valuable too. While not an immediate indicator of dedication to teaching, you pick things up from practical playing experience you don’t get in a classroom. These can benefit novice’s and pros alike.

Long & McQuade is one of Canada’s biggest online music stores and offers a wide selection of guitars, electric guitars, acoustic guitars, Gibson guitars, guitar amps and accessories.

Playing any instrument is a very rewarding experience – it’s a way to tap into your creative side. If you’ve never picked up an instrument before, don’t worry, it’s incredibly easy to learn even later on in life. One of the most popular instruments for people just starting out is the acoustic guitar. There is nothing quite like learning the different notes and strumming along to your favorite songs. For beginners, it’s recommended that you start out with a used guitar. Not only will it be more affordable, but you’ll get a guitar that has a mature, well-rounded sound. Here are some tips when buying a used acoustic guitar:

1. Pay attention to the body for damage and scratches.

The very first thing you should do is make sure there are no glaring problems with the guitar and that it looks well-used but not worn out.

2. Query the seller

When was the guitar bought? How long has the seller owned the guitar for? Were there any issues with the guitar? A proper seller should answer all of your questions and give an honest representation of what they are selling.

3. Test it.

If you are able to you should try playing the guitar. It is the best way to find a guitar which is perfect for you. If the strings are missing or broken, buy some and set it up properly.

4. Compare Models

A guitar is a big investment, shop around before choosing the one you want. The best way to look is at guitar shops or on line sites such as eBay. Forums are another good place to learn about different guitar traits. A friend may also be able to give you advice.

If you are just starting to learn to play the guitar, the best investment you can make is to buy a well used and cared for guitar. The best place to look for these are sites such as eBay where you are able to find many major brands that are sold at cheap prices. Guitar manufacturers such as Takamine, Gibson, Martin and Taylor are all available on sites like eBay. When you decide on the model you want to buy make sure that the seller has good feedback and is trustworthy.

The best place to buy Used Acoustic Guitar on line. Choose from a huge selection of Used Acoustic Guitars for sale. There are plenty of different guitars to choose, many models from Takimine to Gibson

How To Play Hammer Ons And Pull Offs On Your Guitar.

How To Play Hammer Ons And Pull Offs On Your Guitar.

In the last article/mini guitar lesson you learned how to move the pentatonic pattern 1 around the neck. In this lesson we will expand on that to bring a technique called the \”hammer on\”.

For example let\’s take pattern 1 at the 5th fret (Am).

OK, to play the \”hammer on\” you need to hold down the 6th string at the 5th fret and then pluck it. Then bring down your 4th finger hard onto the 8th fret with enough force to allow the string to ring out as though you had plucked it!

In order to master thus technique you need to practice. Practice playing the hammer on on all the strings in the scale pattern… This is known as \”hammering on\”!!!

Once you are able to play the \”hammer on\” quickly you will build up your speed over time and find that you will be able to play notes quickly without having to pick the strings individually. This will speed up your overall playing ability…

All great guitarists have practiced. Try to pick up your guitar EVERY day even if just for a few short minutes, it\’s better than not playing at all and eventually you will find your fingers become on autopilot without you realising…

To add to the \”hammer on\” we will now have a go at a technique called the \”pull off\” and is the next killer technique you must try to master on your road to becoming a great player!

We will start off again using pentatonic pattern one at the 5th fret (Am). Hold down the 8th fret with your 4th finger and also the 5th fret with your first finger on the 6th string.

Now pick the string sounding the note at the 8th fret (C)

Here\’s the great part: Pluck the string while the note is still ringing with your 4th finger (pull off) to sound the note at the 5th fret (A), do not use your pick at all whilst doing this.

Make sure you practice this on all the strings up and down pattern 1.

Using \”hammer on\’s\” and \”pull off\”s\” is a much used feature in great sounding solos.

You need to practice these techniques over and over until your fingers start to bleed! Only joking!

Hi It's Mike from Killer Guitar Tips with some more mini guitar lessons.

Hi It\’s Mike from Killer Guitar Tips with some more mini guitar lessons.

I am now going to show you a couple of mini guitar lessons in this article that you really should know to help get your guitar soloing of to a great start and stop you from sounding shall we say mediocre!

OK, let\’s get going…

In this weeks mini guitar lesson I will show you how to use the pentatonic pattern #1 scale for both major and minor solo\’s.

The first thing we need to consider is that every pentatonic pattern can be used for both major and minor scales.

The following are known as relative major and minors. That is, pattern #1 at the fifth fret produces two keys, A minor (Am) and C major (C).

Therefore to get a real cool bluesy rock sound and knowing that we can use this pattern for BOTH minor and major keys, Am and C maj, we simply play the Am pattern over a backing track written in A major!

Now here\’s the good bit…

Keeping with this pattern, move the whole pattern down the neck towards the tuning pegs by just 3 frets. Now, when we play this same pattern here we will now be playing in A major that produces a very melodic, tuneful soloing sound!!!

This next little mini guitar lesson staying with the theme of moving the pentatonic pattern 1 around the neck creating killer solo\’s.

In the key of A, play pentatonic pattern #1 at the 5th fret (Am) you will create a great bluesy rock solo.

Now here\’s the best part… Try moving the whole pentatonic pattern #1 shape up the neck to the 7th fret which will be Em and continue playing! You will find this produces a fantastic melodic sound using the exact same pattern only at a different part of the neck, try it for yourself. You\’ll find many, many guitarists use this simple little trick to enhance their sound.

Remember to make a place on your hard drive for all the mini guitar lessons I will be giving you in articles over the coming weeks and make sure you practice them regularly. You will eventually have a fantastic bag of tricks that when used together in a solo will produce a pro sound. Your friends will be amazed at you new found skill!

All these mini guitar lessons i will be giving you are just a very small fraction of material contained in the Killer Guitar Tips home study course but even so are invaluable in your journey to be come a great player.
