If you are someone, or know someone who is wanting to begin playing an acoustic guitar, it is ideal to know how to choose one. With all the choices out there, educating yourself and the knowledge in choosing which one to buy can either help someone’s enthusiasm to play an acoustic guitar. Make a huge mistake and it can hurt someone’s playing experience.

There are two kinds of acoustic guitars. One is the steel-string guitar which has a treble sound and the nylon string guitar that has a bass sound. We advise you to have the store personnel play each kind so you know what you like. Most guitar players have the tendency to favor one over the another, but there are some that like both.

The size of acoustic guitar is also important, as acoustic guitars come in different sizes, ranging from jumbo to the small guitars. The larger ones produce lower pitched sounds than the smaller one, but what we advise you to choose is the guitar that is comfortable to hold. In practicing, you will encounter many challenges and you don’t want additional difficulties in the process.

Brand of the guitar is also important because brands can spell quality. Try to invest in reputable brands like Seagull, Martin, Yamaha, Ibanes or Fender and you will not be disappointed. Be sure to check each make from the same brands as quality can also differ from each model to another.

Second hand guitar shops are also an option as you can also find gems at a low price there. However, make sure you bring someone who is an expert in buying guitars with you.

There are more things to consider when buying an acoustic guitar, like the design, accessories among others, but those are the most important.

Alex is both an electric and acoustic guitar player. You can see his review of the most awesome acoustic guitar package, the Yamaha Gigmaker Standard Acoustic Guitar Package, in his article, Yamaha Gigmaker Standard Acoustic Guitar Package.

There are several things to remember when you’re out searching for your first acoustic beginner guitar. First of all, you want the very best guitar your money can buy. The value of an easier-to-play, high quality instrument will be clearly seen in both its tone and its responsiveness to the touch.

If you’re looking for a high-end acoustic beginner guitar, an excellent choice is the Seagull S6, costing about $400-$500. It may be more expensive than what most beginners are prepared to pay, but it is an exceptional guitar for the price. Even professionals often keep their Seagull S6 after they’ve purchased many other guitars. Another good high-end acoustic beginner guitar is the Washburn D10S. Acoustic Guitar magazine voted it #1 for guitars under $500. Most people looking in this price range will end up choosing the Washburn or the Seagull.

Excellent choices if you want to spend a bit less include Yamahas F310, Takamines G-240 and Fenders DG7. For a rock-bottom price in an acoustic beginner guitar, you will want to look at Epiphones DR-100. You’ll have to switch to a more advanced instrument down the road, since its only meant for rookies, but you’ll get a really good buy for somewhere between $120 and $150.

When you are looking for your first guitar, avoid the very cheap ones. These are actually harder to play and can be hard for even an experienced player. A cheaper made acoustic beginner guitar is just not made well and usually have really high action, meaning there is more space between the strings and the fingerboard than the more expensive guitars. This can make a beginner just give up.

If you were planning on spending around $100 or less, a second hand acoustic beginner guitar is a good option. One of the benefits would be the guitar having some character. Take for example, two second hand Yamaha F310’s. Try them both out as they will likely have distinctly different sounds. These sounds may even give you some insight on the personality of who owned the guitar before.

You should always avoid buying a guitar from someone who doesn’t know beans about caring for one. A guitar has to be handled like a lover (or at least a friend!). When it hasn’t been properly treated, its just never going to make great music. If an acoustic beginner guitar you’re trying feels a bit off for any reason, go on to the next one.

When you are buying your first acoustic beginner guitar you should ask the salesperson to play it for you. The person selling the guitar needs to understand that you can not yet play the instrument but want to hear what it will sound like when you can. You never know, maybe they are helping the next great guitar player to buy their first instrument.

Pretty popular tune. Extreme was a really interesting band put together in the late 80s, mostly by Gary Cherone and Nuno Bettencourt. Now they’ve had a lot of other rotating members. And like a lot of bands, they’ve been pretty voluble sometimes in their getting along with each other and some things like that. But they were mostly popular in the late 80s and early 90s. They cite their influences as a couple of really big bands from little earlier, Van Halen and Queen. And as a matter of fact, they played together in 1992 at the Freddy Mercury Tribute Concert. And shortly after that, Gary Cherone even joined Van Halen for one album. I believe he was only on “Van Halen III”.

They describe their music as funk metal or funky metal. And most of it is influenced by, again, those early metal bands, Queen and Van Halen. There are some other bands that they’re very similar to. “Drama Gods”, “Morning Widows”, “Tribe of Judah”, “Satellite Party”, “Twisted Sister”, even “Dweezil Zappa” would be considered a similar band.

Extreme has sole countless albums over the years. Five of these are highly notable and need credit, as well as a few EPS that had been sold exclusively in Japan. There have also been a few single releases. In the early 1990’s, sales had exceeded 10 million, which is a huge accomplishment. The largest selling album was named “Porngraphitti”, which was the second release. This is the album which contained the infamous song “More than Words”.

Many of the members from Extreme came from Malden, MA. During the late 80’s a band called Dream had split, and some of these members came together with Nuno Bettencourt, who had been part of a band named Sinful. Pat Badger from In the pin became the bass player. This group of players began working together, and their relationship grew until they started arguing at small things. Eventually they named their band Dream, which changed to Ex-Dream. Ultimately, the permanent name was changed to Extreme. One of their biggest hits came from the infamous movie, Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, even though the real claim to fame for this group is the song More Than Words. This song, which is known for the guitar as well as the percussive guitar playing Nuno is known for. This method is difficult to master, but is a great way to teach method. The best way to do this, but still difficult, is to break it down to specific methods.

The song reached the Billboard’s Top 100 during 1991, as soon as it was recorded. IT became a huge hit, and continues today to be popular on different Medias such as YouTube. There are many versions of this video, including the promotional one. At the beginning, you see dials getting turned down from amplifiers. The bass player and drummer pack up get and have a seat on the couch. Ultimately, it focuses on Gary and Nuno simply playing. The others are sitting on the couches, reading a newspaper, while holding up lighters symbolizing giving the song the attention it deserves.

The band enjoyed a moderate amount of success during those few years, until around 1993. Then their popularity got a little dicey. Later, they brought new members into the band during 1994-1996, but ultimately they split up and headed into their own pursuits. Since then, they have put out two more albums, in 2008 and 2010. The first was named simply “Extreme”, and the second was “Extreme II: Pornoggraffiti”. This was during the mid 90’s, and the most recent albums were released more recently.

These guys appeared on the “Metal Mania” show on VH1, where they were praised and defied by the hosts. There have also been videos of Nuno trying to provide guitar lessons with the song “More Than Words”, where he was a little recalcitrant. It obviously wasn’t his cup of tea, but he did allow the cameras to get close up shots of his hands while he was playing. The video seemed to give the feeling that he didn’t really want to share the information.

There are some people who aren’t eager or interested in sharing their knowledge when teaching the guitar. This can be upsetting for some students, since there is an abundance of information and creativity to pass around.

Extreme has a new album being released this May, 2010, that was recorded in Boston. Many of the big hits, such as “More Than Words”, “Comfortably Dumb” and Decadence Dance” are included on this new album.

There are also other songs included, such as “Rest In Peace, “It’s a Monster”, Midnight Express”, and “Star”. The song “War and Peace taken from Mikolai Korsakov called flight of the Bumblebee also have contributed to the success.

Oh, they are coming back. That was not “Flight of the Bumble Bee” but…and of course, couple of other big hits, “Get The Funk Out” and “Hole Hearted”. Now, there is a DVD that comes along with it that includes some other really interesting stuff but we are not going to talk about that anymore. We’ll just talk a little bit more about “More Than Words” because it is of course your typical Howard ballad, maybe. Oh, White Snake, that was the band I was trying to think of earlier that had a lot of these kind of things. They had the Girl Crawling On the Car sort of stuff and then meant for that…that real powerful look and screaming ballad type of thing. So, White Snake, another 80’s band and part of the Hair band stories that happened back in then.

More than Words is addressing the listener to use more than words to show love, but the appeal quickly became universal. Parodies of this song were made by many bands, including Weird Al Yankovic. His version was called “You Don’t Love Me Anymore”. Amateur bands also created a variety of spinoffs, such as Northern Birds” from the Amateur Transplants band in 2006.

But there are also parody videos of it by Jason Seagull and the cast of “How I Met Your Mother”. So, anyway, “More Than Words” again hit the billboard top 200, hot 100 in 1991. And eventually, was number one. It was number two in the UK on a singles chart. So, it really had a lot going for it and put them on the map as far as a band that more people had heard of than other bands from this genre. Again, when I listed the other bands earlier that they were like…you probably haven’t heard of, most of them.

Also, a heavily covered tune. Hard to believe but it is. There are bunch of bands that did their own versions of it and of course, the Amateur Transplants I mentioned but D.B. Mac, West Life, David Cassidy…now, there is somebody who has had a very up and down career but in 2003, he put an album out called A Touch of Blue. Now, most of us know David Cassidy from his work with the Partridge Family and always struggling with his identity. Was he Keith Partridge at who is a TV rock singer or was he David Cassidy who want to be a real life rock and roll guitar player?

It’s hard to differentiate who his genuine character is. He is the son of Jack Cassidy, and the stepson to Shirley McClain, who knew him on the set with the Partridge Family as well. His dad had an action history, going back to multiple shows, such as Colombo episodes and a mystery movie series.

Peter Falk, Colombo, Jack Cassidy and Dick Van Dyke, were all famous villains. They were also all tied to David Cassidy. He is part of the story because he covered the song “More Than Words”. A last few observations on this song are the drippy sentiment this song conveys is a weak attempt to replicate great writers, such as Gershwin, or Cole Porter. The adolescent ramblings have been compared to John Meyers.

But, the band still is trying to make a living happening. Actually, they are making very good livings because Nuno Bettencourt again, is really a phenomenal guitar player and he is just been sort of pigeon holding to this style, this funky metal style. But we can always hope that they will be doing a little bit more stuff like this because frankly I love the song “More Than Words” and it is really worth having all my students work on it. So, they can come up with a little bit more stuff like that. Also, then we would have a lot more Extreme available as instructional stuff for folks.

Now, most of the other stuff can be found in various places on the Internet. All kinds of places around. I forgot to talk about one more thing and I was there as another great speaking of parodies. There is a great parody video, also at YouTube that would be worth checking out that talks… that shows…It looks at of…from the angle of what the other two guys were really doing or what they were really thinking or talking about while the video was going on. Now, this was not the real guys doing it but it’s still…somebody put together a great edited video that…

Do, if you’ve got a chance, track that one down but in any case “More Than Words” is well worth its weight in gold in terms of instructional stuff for guitar and entertainment value and everything else. So, I really encourage you to check out “More Than Words” and a few of the other things by Extreme.

I am really enjoy rock and roll history and EXtreme is a very interesting band.

Over the years, acoustic music has climbed in popularity – whether it be from rock bands coming out with acoustic versions of their songs, pop artists trying to get in touch with their raw selves, or new acoustic artists coming on to the scene. There are many reasons why this trend may be happening, but why have acoustic songs become such a big deal?

Many think it’s because the music is so simple. There is just something refreshing about hearing a guitar or piano along with a good quality voice that seems to hit us in the heart. When today’s music genres have expanded into music that is artificially produced, or played over a speaker while the performer just sings, it is nice to see that there are still some musicians out there who appreciate the simplicity of acoustic music.

But something that truly needs to be considered is what acoustic musicians write about. There seems to be a bit of a pattern that helps people relate to acoustic music more than other types of music. The way musicians can express their feelings or stories in good acoustic songs is truly amazing, and is not the traditional way musicians have done it in the past.

Expressions of love is one of the most popular subject matters for music. Especially in the United States, we feel that a song is one of the ultimate ways we can express ourselves to someone we love, or someone we are infatuated with. We are not scared to stand up on stage with our guitars are sing at the top of our lungs about how we love someone. But acoustic songs take it to a whole new level. Consider the songs “Lucky” by Jason Mraz. He sings a duet with a woman about how they are so lucky to be in love and be best friends. The lyrics make it very obvious that this song comes from the heart.

Another way to come up with good acoustic songs is to write about a funny story. A great example of how this is effective is Joshua Radin’s song “Vegetable Car.” In this song he talks about a girl who drives by his house nearly every day while he is sitting on his porch. They don’t even know each other, but Radin describes her in detail, and highlights the fact that it’s kind of strange that he is actually writing a song about a girl he doesn’t even know.

Of course breakups are also a great source for writing good acoustic songs. Chris Carrabba from Dashboard Confessional knows how to harness the emotional distress of a breakup into a great song. Through thought provoking lyrics and riffs that are very catchy, he outlines all of the strange and painful feelings of a breakup.

One other way to come up with good acoustic music is to think about life perspectives and realizations. Everyone knows “Good Riddance” by Greenday. The songs makes you reflect on the times you have in past days and make you hope that you have made the most of them. Life reflections are a great source for material when writing acoustic songs.

It doesn’t really matter what you write about. Acoustic music should come naturally, and you should do it sincerely. That is the key. That’s why people love it so much. Take advantage of the time you have with a guitar and feel the power that comes from good acoustic songs.

Music can have a huge impact, and listening to acoustic songs can change your life.

When you learn to play acoustic guitar it’s a good idea to learn the right techniques but also to make it a bit more fun and learn a good number of songs. There are a number of easy guitar songs that are now huge classics and every guitarist should be able to play them.

When I have a new student I normally start with “Stand By Me”. The song has been written with a popular turn around (I VI IV V) for both Verse & Chorus with the melody changing in each section. The reason why I choose this song at the beginning is that there are quite a number of songs that use the same chord structure so with one shot you are actually learning a few songs. Some of the most popular songs are: “Lonely”, “I Believe I Can Fly” and “Every Breath You Take”.

Another great song writer to look at when learning easy guitar songs is Bob Dylan. He wrote many big hits in his carrier and many of them have been covered by numerous artist all over the world and sold a silly number of records. Some of the titles you should learn are “Knocking On Heaven’s Doors” covered by the Guns & Roses, “Blowing in the Wind” and “All Along The Watch Tower” made even more popular by Jimi Hendrix. All these super mega hits have one thing in common: they have been panned using 3 simple chords.

If you are looking for simplicity than you should start looking at British boy bands and the 1st one is the Beetles. They have written huge classics some of which are not so easy to play. Some of the titles I suggest you learn are “Hey Jude”, “Let It Be”, “Here Come The Sun” and “Yesterday”. Their songs are not always that easy and they do use 7th and sus chords so you better know your chords before you start exploring their songs.

Other great british bands renown for making great music with few simple chord structures are U2 and Cold Play. I just decided to teach my students “Clocks” and I was amused how easy the song is. The same story applies here, 3 simple chords and a riff (using the same chords ) and off you go.

These are just a few title you can start with but look around and you’ll find plenty easy guitar songs you can learn on acoustic guitar. Hope this helps!

Today you can learn almost anything online without the expense of private tuition. There is a wealth of information out there in the traditional form of Books & DVD but also more often as downloadable products like eBooks and Video Courses that you can now teach yourself guitar – and anything really – from your desk. You just need to have the will to learn and a good tutorial to guide you and there you are!

After you have chosen a good tutorial you need to set realistic expectations a healthy practice routine. A good starting point would be to practice a little bit, six days a week. That is the trick when you teach yourself guitar, to do a little bit every day instead of a lot once in a blue moon. You will see that in the long run the benefit is greater.

Like in anything else the more time you spend practising the better you get quicker but be realistic about it and give yourself a chance to get into it a bit at the time. I recommend a minimum of 30 minutes each day 6 days a week of practice. Practice is different than playing. Playing songs or riffs by yourself or with a band over and over does help you get better but it\’s when you sit by yourself and work on new exercises that is challenging for you that you improve .

Time is crucial especially if you only have a little aside for guitar therefore don\’t waste it. Jamming along and doing random exercises will not take you anywhere and you will eventually loose interest in the instrument.

Your first goal when you teach yourself guitar is to learn a few open chords, a few strumming patterns and with that you can start practicing basic songs. The trick is to make the tune flow by keeping the beat and off you go.

That is all from me. Although I\’m simplifying the process this is in a nut shell the secret when you want to learn to play guitar. Do that and you will see fast result.

The Author is a renown session guitarist and has a series of free guitar tutorials that will help you Teach Yourself Guitar the easy way. His method has been developed over the last 20 years and it works. Teach Yourself Guitar Today!
