Song Writing Vocabulary
Now that we are finish with the topic of composing songs for musical instruments, like the guitar along with your voice, let us now learn the common musical and song composition words such as substance, vocal phrasing, mood, metre, prosody and style.
Substance refers to the meaning you want to impart to your listeners. You make use of the normal language and speech being used but instead of reciting them you put music into it. Your creative talents are expressed and it may contain topics like love, politics, war and other human experiences that have been specified in my earlier articles.
The manner in which you make use of your voice to stress the song’s lyrics is referred to as Vocal Phrasing. To better put it, sing in a conversational manner and you get your audience response well. The way the song is sung with the appropriate beat, tempo, mood, melody should be given emphasis. This is why you need to know the proper way of producing your vowels, stretching the notes and words if necessary. If you have to recite a poem or an oratorical piece, you need to be able to pronounce the words correctly and that is the way you should be singing as well. This is the test the range of your voice. Phrasing like in a conversation must be executed well in order to appropriately impart what you really mean.
The Mood. Like in an occasion, you set the atmosphere if it will be a party, a meeting, etc., singing also incorporates this important element. Singing a romantic song means that the mood of the song must be able to convey this and so on. The singer’s ability to deliver the words, the phrasing and the melody of the song establishes the mood of the song. It can be as I have mentioned romantic, peaceful, sweet or the head-banging rock music.
The Pattern. If you are a singer, you must have noticed that there are some songs which lack the proper pattern. What we mean by this is that there seems to be a lot of words or too much wordage that the moment you sing a song, you tend to either go slow or fast. This lack of pattern can make the singer to sound like he is off tune or had missed a beat. It can even be mistaken that he forgot the words and just made an adlib making the song and the music inconsistent. Pattern affects a lot as it can lead to the listeners saying that either the composer does not understand what he wrote or the singer as not a good one. Even an excellent singer will have the same problem. He can probably cover up for the boo-boo of the musician but still one who is very good in music will still notice the lack of pattern. Together with the other components of a musical arrangement, pattern must be able to make the choice of words and the melody to conform to each other.
The Prosody. This is the lyrics, the rhythm, the melody and the chord progression completely in agreement with each other. We can liken it to a relationship where there should be proper understanding, trust, love and honesty. If one of these characteristics fails, it will crumble. Prosody, like metre, should be able to make the mood and the message of the song in harmony. One cannot use a Minor Chord Progression for a cheerful song. Minor chords normally are intended for ho-hum or laid-back songs that touches the emotions, such as too much melancholia. On the other hand, a Major Chord Progression is intended for a buoyant upbeat. The mood, melody, substance, phrasing, chord progression and metre are being connected by prosody.
The Approach. Listeners have classified singers and song writer depending on the songs they sing and create. A song that has been associated to a singer and a song writer has also become their mark. For instance, you can never mistake a Carpenters song. Once you have heard it, you know right away that it was composed by Richard Carpenters and sung by Karen Carpenters. Likewise, you cannot also mistake a Burt Bacharach composition with that of Richard Carpenters although it was sung by Karen Carpenters.
