Taylor Swift Love Story Guitar Lesson
I really enjoy putting a lesson together for the song “Love Story”. My students love it and its really pretty simple to play. You can either strum it like a campfire song or do some intricate finger picking with it. This came out several years ago, in 2008, but still has the attention of music lovers.
Taylor has talked about how she wrote “Love Story” when she was dating a guy in high school that wasn’t very popular. She has said it was a bit complicated, but she didn’t mind. The song originally began with a different line, “This love is difficult but it’s real”. All the sudden, the song ends and she got that happy ending feeling. It was just like that happy ending that every girls longs for in a love story.
She twisted things around a bit, and started with this autobiographical feeling, but of course introduces Romeo and Juliet. This should not be confused with the popular Mark Knopler tune, Romeo and Juliet, its theme going back to Shakespeare and the Renaissance.
The song has a very interesting chord progression, mostly played in “C”. However, it does modulate to the key of “D”. She does play it with a capo, which of course really puts it in the key of D, moving up to E when the capo is on the second fret. This does give it a very typical country twist, starting in one key before modulating slightly to a different key. This song certainly has become Taylor’s signature tune and continues to rip its way up and own the charts. In September, 2008 CMT started playing a music video of the song. It starts out with a guy, played by Justin Gastin, from the present day sitting under a tree. It shows some video scenes that alternate flashbacks and present day scents. It looks like an illusion to Pride and Prejudice.
Taylor is all dressed up in a ball gown, singing outside a castle, and she’s waiting for her version of Mr. D’Arcy, but singing. And some scenes alternate with the past where she’s dancing with some nicer gentlemen and stuff. It all ends when the gentleman arrives, and the video comes back to the present. The boy gets up out of the tree, and they walk to each other, and anyway, it won the CMA award for Music Video of the Year, in November of 2009. Another spectacular song by a spectacular songwriter, that’s for sure. If you aren’t already working on it and want to know what the chords are, just look up my lesson plan on it. I just can’t say enough about the amazing Taylor Swift. She is an incredibly strong up and coming songwriter that everyone should enjoy listening to.
