Ibanez RG Electric Guitars – Why Are They So Popular?
Ibanez RG guitars are especially used for hard rock music as well as metal. They’ve been around since the late eighties and are still being built today.
Apart from their popularity, there are many unknown facts about RG guitars that make them unique among so many others. The RG initials do not, contrary to popular belief; stand for Rocky George (lead guitarist for Suicidal Tendencies and now for Fishbone). The two letters actually stand for Roadstar Guitar.
The initial model in this musical instruments series was the RG550 and was an instant success. It is this model that gave them their worldwide popularity. A few design features in this line make them special and explain why they are most used in hard rock or metal contexts.
The guitar is equipped with a wide and flat fret board. The build and size of this double fret board make it perfect for chords and solos. The neck is much thinner. The guitar seen from the front reminds of two horns; these are the double pointed cutaways. The body is designed this way to allow for easier access to the upper frets on the board.
The current series from the Ibanez manufacturer is split up into five lines of product. These brands are the Ibanez J Custom, RG Extreme, Prestige, Tremolo and Fixed.
The first, the J Custom, is strictly sold in the Japanese market. They are very rare and are seldom retailed in Europe. The three next lines are rather similar, the Extreme serves as a compromise of quality and price between the Tremolo and Prestige. These three lines all have pickups made by EMG. The last line is, as its name states, a fixed-bridge guitar line.
These instruments have a long history of quality and popularity. They are sure to be around for ages and will continue their tradition of hard rocking.
