Guitar Essentials – Tuning An Acoustic Guitar
If you want to sound good on a guitar, you must have a properly tuned instrument. Even a great guitarist will sound bad, if the instrument is out of tune. I believe that tuning is a skill that every guitarist should learn. It’s essential and it will make things much more practical. In the following article we’ll talk about the importance of tuning and how to learn it.
So why is tuning so important? It’s very simple – if you want to get a decent sound out of your guitar, you must tune it properly. You probably had the chance to play around with an out of tune instrument. Was it fun? Probably not.
You should tune your guitar regularly. Before every playing session would be best. And because you probably don’t want to be dependant on other people to do this for you, learning the skill yourself is more than a worthwhile investment of your time.
Many beginners are convinced that they will never be able to learn how to do it. And they don’t even try. While it’s not the easiest thing to learn, it’s definitely not that difficult. You just need time and practice. And the more you do it, the better you will get.
So how do you tune an acoustic guitar? First, you must identify the strings. Then you readjust the pitch of the strings so that they produce the correct notes. You do this by tightening or loosening the tuning peg on the head of the guitar. Usually a reference note is needed. This may be a string that is in tune or a note from another instrument.
Let me mention at this point that if the string is too worn out, you won’t be able to tune it correctly. Over time strings wear out and you have to replace them.
In your guitar career one thing will be constant – your instrument will repeatedly go out of tune. Be prepared.
