Learning how to play the guitar is really not as easy as most people believe. You must learn basic theory, plenty of chords that can be quite tricky to master, and even how to move between chords quick enough to put a song together. However, once you begin to get the hang of these basics, you will know all of your hard work was well worth the effort. You will be able to play your favorite songs any time you want without even thinking about it. Learning will be even quicker if you can avoid making the following four common beginner mistakes:

Going Too Fast: Sorry, this may seem boring, but it is very important that you do not rush through the basics just to get to the good songs and chords. You will end up paying in the long run. Unfortunately, you have to go through a certain amount of “boring” stuff before you can move on. Skimming through it is only going to cause problems in your progress later. Learn your scales, major and minor, learn your notes, and do not rely too much on guitar tablature. You should even give finger picking a try. Practice and memorize as much as you can; this will help you get to the good stuff faster.

Getting Hung Up With Barre Chords: Barre chords can be a major headache for beginners. I, myself, took several months to learn them. These chords are played by lying one finger across many different strings, which can be quite difficult to master. Many people just give up when they hit this point, because they become too frustrated while trying to learn, or they just cannot get the hang of them. As hard as it may be, you cannot let barre chords end your learning experience.

A better way to proceed is to practice barre chords daily, but to also learn other things at the same time. This will allow you to devote half of your practice sessions to them, and half to new things. You will be moving forward, which will keep you from getting frustrated and once you do master barres, you will have learned plenty of new skills as well.

Ignoring Rhythm: Playing with a metronome might not seem cool, but it is crucial to get you used to sticking to the rhythm of the song. A lot of people just play a song how they think it should sound, with no appreciation of the actual rhythm. You can get away with that by yourself and it sounds ok, but if you try to play with anyone else, or play along to a backing track etc, then suddenly you will realize you speed up on the chorus, or you are playing way too slowly.

Careless Practice: Try to keep from practicing sloppily, always aim for the best possible practice each and every time, as this will help you to progress quicker. You should not try to play too fast, and you should not ignore your mistakes. Take your time, concentrate, and make sure your notes and technique are perfect before moving on. This extra care will really help you to progress a lot faster.
